Lesson 4 of 8

Lesson 4 · Navigation shortcuts

Go up and go home

Two dots (..) mean the parent directory—one level above your current location. A tilde (~) represents your home directory. A bare cd also returns home, and one dot (.) means the current directory.

Examplecd ..

One .. moves up one level. Multiple parent steps can be joined with a slash when you need to climb farther.

Try it

Starting in the website directory, climb two parent levels to return home, then confirm with pwd.

Lost? Run pwd to orient yourself. A bare cd returns home, and Restart lesson restores the starting location (~/projects/website).
