Lesson 5 of 8

Lesson 5 · Absolute paths

Navigate from root

An absolute path begins with the root directory / and describes a location in relation to root no matter where you currently are. A relative path depends the current directory that you are in. /etc is absolute; projects/website is relative.

Examplecd /tmp

The leading slash makes /tmp an absolute path, so this command reaches it from any current directory.

Try it

Use an absolute path to move to /etc, then confirm the full path with pwd.

Lost? Run pwd to orient yourself. A bare cd returns home, and Restart lesson restores the starting location (~).
