Lesson 6 of 8

Lesson 6 · Reading the map

Important directories

/home contains user homes, /etc stores system configuration, /var holds changing data such as logs, /tmp is for temporary files, and /usr contains many installed programs and shared resources. Reading a file with cat does not modify it.

Examplecat ~/welcome.txt

cat prints a text file to the terminal without modifying it. Here it reads a short example file from your home directory.

Try it

List root, then display the system release file stored at /etc/os-release.

Lost? Run pwd to orient yourself. A bare cd returns home, and Restart lesson restores the starting location (~).
